A GPS tracking unit, or simply a tracker is an electronic locating device that uses GPS satellites to triangulate its own latitude and longitude (location), speed, and heading.
Most trackers will have an ability to periodically relay this information via a cellular modem to a predetermined host application (service provider).
Tracking devices may be powered from vehicle's electrical system, others by internal battery. More sophisticated units will have both and use the internal rechargeable battery as a back-up when main power is tampered with.
When enabled, advanced tracker models can perform certain remote functions inside a vehicle, such as, disable starting the engine, lock/unlock doors, sound horn, etc. Additionally, some units can let you know when the doors, hood, and/or trunk were opened and closed.
